A Drive in the Ozarks

Clearly the highlight of the recent vloggercue for me was when I met Amanda of Rocketboom and her boyfriend Mario. They both are big fans of the Richard show, no kidding, really, seriously, ok, they said they were, and I will choose to believe them. Anyway, they are both very cool (and obviously have great taste). To top it all off, Mario created a video on his vlog, Mario's Scope, and this is a link to that video.

Amanda also has her own vlog, Amanda Unboombed. I, of course, link and subscribe to both, and I recommend that you do too.

My friend John Wyss is one of those amazing "seniors", who makes you want to live to be a "senior". Despite all the physical challenges that go with growing old, John is one of the happiest, active and generally entertaining characters in my life. He tells the story of how he became a pilot and, interspersed are shots my wife took when flying with him in his Piper Cub recently.

I, personally, think it's very cool and visionary for him to be using new media in this way to reach a wider audience and to achieve a public diaglogue. I asked 4 questions, and I think the last one is the best, though I'm guessing that, if he answers any, it's more likely to be one of the first 3.

In 1994 my wife, Maureen Hall, and I recorded an album we called "Sidiosynchrasies and Hallucinations" - the band at the time was called "Sidio & Hall". One of the songs was called "Spam" about the luncheon meat (not email). In response to a request for music oriented videos on the Yahooo Video Blog email list, we created our first music video using this song. Though I don't think it's going to make it to music TV any time soon, we had a lot of fun.

We still write songs sometimes for fun and when we play out (rarely) we now use the name "Elderly Child". Also, by the way, I was motivated to put all the songs on the album on the internet archives under a creative commons license.

My wife, Maureen, and I went to one of our favorite places in St. Louis, which is about 90 miles from Rolla, where we live. (Rolla is a small town in the Missouri Ozarks.) The restaurant, which only serves brunch on Sundays (how posh), is called Cafe Madeleine. It is in Tower Grove Park, next to the Botanical Gardens. We also walked around in the park and went to the Gardens and, of course, I videotaped incessantly. Actually, my wife helped a lot and seemed to really get into doing the video thing, in fact, maybe a little too much, in that she kept grabbing the camera, and giving me directions - a born director :). I’m hoping to make some other installments of Ma and Pa Richard go to the big city soon.

Ok, so the truth is that I actually made a video before my "first video" before my camera arrived. I made this with a web cam, and, while I would like to tell you it's heavy and profound, I would, of course, be lying. However, it did pass our editorial review board. The vote was a tie (0 to 0) and, being the chair of the board, I broke the tie and voted "yes" and gave it a big thumbs up.

Well, this is the big moment, my first video. The video itself is one that I took the other night when my wife and I were sitting on the porch and heard a noise at the bird feeder and, as we suspected, it was one of many racoons that live around our house. Even though my camera had a night light it didn't work too well and the picture was farily dark. However, I am using a free trial version of Adobe Elements, and a white contrast tool made it much more viewable (based the performance of adobe elements, I plan to buy a version). I spent most of my time making the cheezy introduction and credits, which was a lot of fun, and used freeplaymusic.com for the music. I relied heavily on freevlog's tutorials for posting.

Well, I must say, I’m just giddy with excitement because … drum roll … this is my first post on my new blog. I’ve been spending a lot of time recently immersed in web culture, and, right now, I’m most obsessed with the video blog concept – mainly because the idea of alternative/grass roots media, fascinates and, dare I say, enthralls me.

Of course, the web is like our minds, in that we stumble onto something that leads to something, which leads to something etc. This current journey/dance began when I read something about the open media network … which lead me through a bunch of video blogs, and eventually to the Carol and Steve Show and rocketboom, which lead me to free vlog, which lead me to blogger, and that’s what I used to create this blog … magic … amazing … hunkered down in the web cultural experience …
